Happy birthday to Gerardus Mercator (1512-1594) renown Flemish cartographer.
What made Mercator a great #cartographer, was in fact his abilities as a #mathematician -and like those of us scientists who feel compelled also to create art he was wasn’t hindered by his immense ability as an engraver. He produced beautiful world maps (a version of which is depicted in this print), globes,

Far from finished, but this is the extended shape the improved land of Nicea. The new sections are to the far west and east. Seeing the ocean on both sides really frames the continent and aesthetically improves the map more than I would have guessed. I’m back once again to the magical land of Nicea. The client has been using the map in family games and now wants to extend the map to the east and west so it shows the whole continent which will look great. Underground ruins map for Mike Shea of @slyflourish, which will also feature in the city of arches kickstarter source book. As ever this map features unexpected encounters. My favourite, was drawing “a goblin village built inside the decaying skeleton of a giant dragon, but make it a *happy* village”. The Undercity of Mike Shea’s City of Arches. A dark dangerous subterranean city in ruins. I used the cave walls and exposed rock strata to emphasise the underground vibe, with complex multi directional lighting and many small bright light sources selling the subterranean environment.
