Catching lightning in a bottle.

That night I couldn’t sleep. Since the sky was open, I set out to the beach in hopes of photographing star trails. I was in #PuertoPadre, #Cuba and light pollution was virtually zero, so I had high hopes.

I hadn’t the faintest clue as to how long exposure had to be, but I figured an hour would be a good estimate. Since the only lens I had at that time was a #Canon EF 28-135 IS USM, I couldn’t include the Polestar if I also wanted to have the #sea in the foreground. However I included a desolated cabin (a hut really) in the frame which I would light paint with my flash.

About halfway through the exposure a first lightning flash. Although I had no way of knowing how it would result, I didn’t stop the exposure thinking it could add some extra panache to the resulting photo. Before long the storm built up and the sky was filled with lightning bolts.

Rain starting was my cue to stop exposure and collect everything and leave. When I arrived at the lodge I was soaking wet enveloped by showers of rain I never experienced before (and since.) More seriously, I hadn’t been able to keep my camera dry which was dripping wet also (it didn’t survive and died a couple of months later. The lens on the other hand was unharmed, still functioning normally when I sold it a couple of years later.)

Of course, I was curious at the result, although I halfheartedly expected nothing from it. Turned out it was my best lucky shot I ever made. Even the star trails are visible. Only downside is the cabin: even after a quadruple scan of the negative and some heavy lifting in #captureone (I tried other software as well) there’s no detail to be had and it remains a black square. I could do a retouch to clone it away, but I decided to leave it as it is, since it adds something to the story.

Fondry des Chiens.

Nicknamed the Grand #Canyon of the Ardennes (fear not, it is much, much smaller!) the #fondrydeschiens is a natural formed sinkhole in #Nismes, #Belgium on the border with France.

It is a little marvel of #nature and well worth a detour. Late spring and summer you will find lots of orchids in the pastures nearby. The place is protected as a natural reserve.

If you decide to go there, try to avoid the weekends and holidays since it tends to get crowded.

Still over the moon.

For me a #silentsunday today.

Apologies for the crappy IQ, there is only so much I can do and I couldn’t take my Pentax K1 along.

Been to a concert which was high on the list for ages, but the man hardly if ever comes to Belgium and there was also corona which mixed things up.

I can cross that off now, although if I get the chance I will go again. Boy, can the man still sing! Best #concert I’ve attended in ages! Very enjoyable.

Taking the wrong way also takes you to places…

I couldn’t wrap my head around it. The locals said this was the way to Pico Turquíno, the highest #mountain on #Cuba. But why was I walking miles and miles on a concrete road and not on a cute pathway like I imagined? Suddenly a jeep with 2 military stopped next to me.

What was I doing here? Walking up the mountain.
Why would I do that? Because I love to hike.
Why would one hike here? Because I love nature.

The two looked at each other in disbelief but clearly saw I didn’t had any harmful intentions, so they let me continue. But, having seen my camera dangling from my shoulder asked to put it away.

No pictures! If you take any pictures we will have to confiscate your camera… There’s a military camp uphill.

They looked serious enough, so I put my camera away and continued my journey only to arrive at a gate a couple of hours later. I couldn’t proceed and some guard urged me to return where I came from. I could see #picoturquino lying a little further, but there was no possibility to reach it from where I was. #Deception.

Later I learned that I had reached La Comándancia de la Plata de Sierra Maestra, a mouthful to say the old headquarters where #Castro led the revolution in ’58 against Batista and which were then (and probably still are) barracks to the Cuban military and which were standing in the way to reach Pico Turquíno. So I never got to reach the deep blue #peak because I came from the West. Had I come from the North it wouldn’t have been a problem.

(but Iat least I have seen Castro’s headquarters!)

A #Belgian thingy?

Until 2016 publication of these photos would have been illegal. From the website of the #Atomium (pictured here:)
#copyright restrictions exempt private individuals (…) where photographs are taken by private individuals and shown on private websites for no commercial purpose.’

SABAM, #Belgium's society for collecting copyrights and having an illustrious reputation for claiming copyrights (even when it’s not even holding it,) has claimed worldwide intellectual property rights on all reproductions of the Atomium and has gone so far to demand a US website to remove all images from its pages.

Luckily Belgium has come to its senses and since 2016 there is freedom of panorama, allowing pictures of public buildings under copyright to be legally distributed.
