Sunderland's new Eye Hospital pictured rising up as construction continues on this new state-of-the art-facility. The original Sunderland and North Durham Eye Infirmary was established off High Street East nearly 190 years ago in 1836. The present Eye Infirmary, located on Queen Alexandra Road, was opened just after the Second World War by the then Princess Elizabeth.

Into April with a host of golden daffodils in the grounds of Sunderland's Grade I listed St Peter's Church, founded by Benedict Biscop in AD674 when the area was part of the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Northumbria. Venerable Bede, who was brought by his parents to be educated at the monastic site which once occupied the grounds in this view, recorded that Benedict brought stonemasons and glassworkers from Gaul to help build the church, as these crafts were not yet established in Anglo-Saxon England.

Must admit, I'm really looking forward to being able to catch this Sunderland city view again soon, but from the higher perspective of the new pedestrian/cycle bridge across the River Wear.
Took this photograph prior to the riverside paths being closed off while construction of the bridge has been underway.
Due to open this summer, the new crossing will provide more direct and easier access between the the city centre and the new developments taking place across on the north side of the river, including the Stadium of Light.
