Two days later we have a floor (frame). Went off piste and almost entirely used cypress macrocarpa for the structural timber. A bit splittier than pine, particularly tangential to the growth rings, but similar strength, more durable, stable and nice to work. One of my favourite timbers and the mill really did well. Having said all that not something I'd recommend on a typical build where the builder thinks about ordering timber a week before they need it.

This tree came down in recent storms blocking a footpath. The path has now been cleared leaving this freshly cut stump. I think it's likely they will leave it in place, where it will become food and home for insects, which will in turn support a food chain on small animals and birds, followed by lager animals.

You are presuming that the feds will obey federal law.

The timber industry has been part of the multiple use management of the Black Hills for years and years. But it has been managed at a level that allows trees to grow back to a size suitable. And they never clear-cut. They always leave some of modest size to start the regrowing.
