scy<p>One of the USB ports on my Ryzen 7040 Framework Laptop 13 stopped working some time ago, after a firmware update I think. Rebooting didn't help, leaving it powered off for some time didn't either. Even another firmware update didn't fix it.</p><p>But a mainboard reset as described in <a href="https://community.frame.work/t/diy-fw-13-amd-7640u-port-1-not-working/42069/7" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">community.frame.work/t/diy-fw-</span><span class="invisible">13-amd-7640u-port-1-not-working/42069/7</span></a> did.</p><p>1. Trevor<p>Heck yeah. Am I happy I needed a new mainboard? No. Am I excited for the upgrade, and the excuse to tinker with my laptop? Yup. Max<p>okay, so my official verdict is I'm not recommending <a href="https://im-in.space/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a> at this point in time.</p><p>it's cool, it's got fun features and stuff, but it's also the most unreliable piece of tech I've ever owned, and I've owned multiple sets of cheap bluetooth headphones.</p><p>in less than a year of me owning it, it had:</p><ul><li>ports randomly failing until reboot</li><li>CPU frequency randomly dropping to 1Ghz until reboot</li><li>liquid metal leaking and causing boot failures</li><li>keyboard keys getting stuck and/or out of place</li><li>random non-persistent boot failures where it just sits with a black screen for a couple of minutes</li><li>whatever the fuck is happening right now where it corrupted my FS and fails to boot even from a live USB</li></ul><p>I do want to believe (although I find it hard, with how they didn't even got around to replacing the faulty liquid-metal-thing in laptops they already sold) that <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomputer" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>frameworkcomputer</span></a></span> will focus on reliability and longevity instead of chasing the AI hype or whatever, but right now I very much can't recommend this.</p>
Trevor<p>I am planning on streaming the mainboard replacement for my <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/FrameworkLaptop" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>FrameworkLaptop</span></a>, but to do so I'll need a computer at the table where I'm going to do the work - can't do it at the desktop, the desk is (rightly) organized around my wife's work stuff. So - welcome back, cursed computer! The <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Ubuntu" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Ubuntu</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/Surface" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Surface</span></a> Pro 3 returns, in all its glory. This is still a pretty nice device, despite its wear and tear from nearly a decade of service. Solidly built, nice action on the keyboard, beautiful screen. <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/microsoft" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>microsoft</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/framework" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>framework</span></a> <a href="https://sunny.garden/tags/streaming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>streaming</span></a></p>

I've just installed 96GB of RAM into my #FrameworkLaptop 13 and I must say that this computer has exceeded my expectations. The memory was about $200 (USD) and it arrived from a local, third party reseller in one day.

I will not run AI models, so the 5600M memory is sufficient for me. The fact that this was an upgrade from 8GB is what counts.

Here comes all the VM memory I ever needed :)

Honest review for those considering buying a used #Framework laptop:

I don't recommend the original with the Intel 11th gen processor. There's been a battery drain problem, which seems possibly related to their swappable ports design. This lead to lower battery-life on a daily basis and a battery that eventually died what I would consider prematurely.

Now I have a daily problem with the USB ports dying until I reboot. Looks like I may need a new motherboard after 3.5 yrs.

@eri even for a #Laptop or #Tablet I consider the #FrameworkDesktop a total "#WontBuy!" on my end, as it has less #Upgradeability and #Repiarability than a #Lenovo #X230Tablet or #Fairphone #FP3plus, mich less anything I consider "#Desktop" hardware.

  • Seriously, @frameworkcomputer could've chosen so much better options or just done some sort of Mounting, adaptors & I/O shield to mount a #FrameworkLaptop mainboard and expand it's I/O to be on-par with a #MacMini and people would've happily accepted that.

It's really sad when #DIYperks put in more effort than an entire company at designing a Desktop!
