That's because not everyone can access alt-text. And those who can't can never read the extra stuff you've put into your alt-text. It's lost to them.

If you need more than 500 characters, you should instead
  • move to a Mastodon server with a higher character limit
  • move to Misskey
    3,000 characters (hard-coded)
    fully federated with Mastodon
  • move to a Misskey fork like Sharkey
    thousands of characters (configurable by admin without hacking into the source code)
    fully federated with Mastodon
  • move to Pleroma or Akkoma
    5,000 characters (configurable by admin without hacking into the source code)
    fully federated with Mastodon
  • move to Friendica
    16,777,215 characters (database field size)
    fully federated with Mastodon
  • move to Hubzilla
    16,777,215 characters (database field size)
    optionally fully federated with Mastodon
  • move to (streams) or Forte

How to Block Meta AI?

You can’t.

But you can slow it down.

The first half of Meta’s bot behaves like any other bot — that part you can block. There are many scripts available that are effective at stopping bots, and they work well.

The second half of Meta’s AI is where the real problem lies.

Meta anticipated that people would eventually catch on to their AI scraping, so they designed a system that uses standard web browsers. The AI doesn’t directly visit your site — it interacts with a browser instance on another system. It just does this using countless small, distributed micro-instances.

They're those who either are commercial or looking for professional/commercial users or both. Flipboard. Automattic (WordPress). Ghost. These kinds.

They know themselves. They know each other. And they know Mastodon. And that's it.

None of them has ever heard of Pleroma or Akkoma.

None of them has ever heard of Misskey or the Forkeys.

None of them has ever heard of Mitra.

None of them has ever heard of GoToSocial.

None of them has ever heard of Hollo.

None of them has ever heard of Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) or Forte, even though Friendica and Hubzilla are both older than Mastodon. And apparently, neither has @Helge. But then again, Friendica and its nomadic, security-enhanced descendants are being overlooked by almost everyone. That's why there's always on-going work for features to be "introduced to the Fediverse" which Friendica has had for a decade and a half.

Granted, the HTML support on Friendica, Hubzilla, (streams) and Forte can be summarised with "yes". But elaborate tables that show what either of them supports how would be very useful.

Also, granted, everything I've mentioned above (normally) uses something else than HTML for formatting in the frontend. For example, Misskey and all Forkeys use MFM ("Misskey-Flavoured Markdown"). Friendica uses extended BBcode with the option to use Markdown instead. Hubzilla uses even more extended BBcode. (streams) and Forte can use the same even more extended BBcode and Markdown and HTML at the same time within the same post, although not all markup languages support all features.

Update:
Da ich ja jetzt doch mal anderes als Mastodon in Fedi ausprobieren will, habe ich jetzt schon einen Sharkey-Account angefragt und werde heute abend mal noch einen Misskey-Account (andere Instanz statt misskey.de) anfragen. Bin jetzt lange genug nur auf Mastodon rumgesegelt.
Dann mal rein ins Abenteuer andere Fedi-Plattformen 😅🤓

No sé si és una incidència de #Misskey o és que sempre ha estat així però fent proves per depurar #appy veig que Misskey 2025.7.0 permet fer tants impulsos com vulguis a un mateix tut (Mastodon, Akkoma, Pleroma no ho permeten).

Diese Frage stellt sich mir so nicht.

Ich bin seit 2008, oft mit eigenen Instanzen, im #Fediverse.

Zuerst auf #Identica, #Pumpio, #StatusNet und #GnuSocial, bis heute mit #Mastodon und #Diaspora.

Auch bei #Misskey, #Pleroma, #GoToSocial, #Friendica, #Hubzilla. #WriteFreely und #Pixelfed hatte ich Abstecher gemacht und diese Systeme getestet. Schlussendlich bin ich eben bei Mastodon und Diaspora hängengeblieben.

Da beutetet aber nicht, dass ich nicht weiterhin die Augen aufhalten und andere Projekte ausprobieren werde, und wer weiß, vielleicht ist irgendwann ja doch ein Wechsel für mich fällig. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Question to the Misskey Admins
I am preferring Sharkey mainly out of two reasons:

- I can edit notes without deleting them first.
- I can understand the changelog.

Regarding the changelogs. How do you manage to read this information when you do not understand Japanese? Are you translating it each time with some translation service?

How to make sure nothing gets lost in translation? I mean sometimes there are important steps to be done when updating the instance that you do not want to miss.

- 1 sol servidor Misskey necessita 945,6 megues de RAM, el segon pitjor en consum de RAM després de Mastodon.
Igual que els anteriors servidors, aquest de Misskey només té un usuari actiu.

Stavo smanettando con i temi #Misskey che si possono scaricare da #github ​:loading:​ e mi sono partiti un pò di pensieri sparsi.....alla fine del 2022 ho scoperto il #Fediverso creando un account su #Peertube e dopo poco ho iniziato ad usare #Mastodon
Da li a pochi mesi ho voluto provare un altro software per cui ho cambiato istanza e sono approdato a #Foxyhole che attualmente utilizza Misskey.
Ancora soddisfatto della scelta.
