xenogon<p>1/n Musicians, do you use a hardware digital delay to create rhythmic textures?</p><p>(For example a rack mount effects unit or a guitar pedal)</p><p>If so here's a thing:</p><p>On both the two delays I have tested so far the time from the direct sound to the first delayed sound is longer than the time between subsequent delays. The error is different on each unit.</p><p>It's a bit subtle, and you might not immediately notice, but it makes playing tightly in sync with the delay difficult (well impossible really) and is just generally a horrifying engineering fail.</p><p>What I want to know is how common this is. Was I just unlucky with those two (cheap, chinese) delay pedals?</p><p>So, if you own a hardware delay, I'd be delighted if you'd test it and post results here.</p><p>To test set up a channel in your DAW to record, and send a quick pulse, such as a muted guitar pluck, though the delay and record the result. You'll want the feedback high enough that you can see 3 or 4 clearly visible repeats, and set the delay to a short time say about 100ms.</p><p>Then measure using your DAW from the highest peak of the direct sound to the same peak of the first repeat, try to get this accurate at least to 1ms, setting the DAW to samples would be better, as the error might be quite small on some units.</p><p>Then do the same between the first and second repeats, are they the same? How big is the difference?
