Tenebris Nox<p>Thank Goodness for Open Core Legacy Patcher. Upgraded my 2012 MacBook to Ventura (I guessed that trying to run Sequoia is probably trying my arm a little too far). Those pesky apps that wouldn’t run on my “obsolete” MacBook now work again.<br><a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.me.uk/tags/blog" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>blog</span></a></p>
Markus Rudel<p>Strange: my wife’s MacBook Air is running out of disk space. I wonder if it is because it’s a MacBook running <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/oclp" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>oclp</span></a> and not the latest <a href="https://infosec.exchange/tags/masos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>masos</span></a> yet. I’ve already scanned for the biggest files and found some iOS backups which I’ve deleted. But still no huge change on the available disk space which feels really strange to me. Any ideas?</p>

I don't know if this is just common now, or a side effect of <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a>, but when trying to boot into recovery mode my speakers didn't work. A set of headphones did, though.</p><p>Now I'm creating an install of MacOS 15.3 because I clearly don't learn from my mistakes.</p>
Steve<p>Nine months ago I installed an update which made it impossible for me to boot into my MacBook Air that had Open Legacy Patcher running so I could continue receiving software updates. I tried fixing it for about a week and then literally put it in a box, assuming it was a lost cause.</p><p>Last night, I dug it back out, determined to fix it. Finally, I did with the instructions here: <a href="https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/TROUBLESHOOTING.html#stuck-on-boot-after-root-patching" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Le</span><span class="invisible">gacy-Patcher/TROUBLESHOOTING.html#stuck-on-boot-after-root-patching</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a></p>

It was stuck on Catalina. I switched to Linux, though it too can run the latest macOS if you use <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a>. </p><p>It is not obsolete yet, despite what Apple thinks. It runs great. I did replace the battery (which is a job and a half, lots of screws and it was also glued in place) but it now gets around 7 hours of battery life again. I also replaced the charger (it had a cable chewed up by my cat) with a USB-C to Magsafe 2 cable that have it pluged into a cheap 65W USB-C PD charger.</p><p>We really need to cut back on <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/eWaste" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>eWaste</span></a>. Apple, a $3.59 trillion company with massive profits, could do a hell of a lot more here. If they supported them longer I am convinced that people would keep using their old machines or pass/sell them on to someone who might. There is a lot to one of these laptops and they sell millions. It would make a difference. In addition, things like the battery should also be easier to replace and more standardised.</p>
Ruarí Ødegaard<p>One of my colleagues works remotely and used to do occasional testing on a <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Mac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Mac</span></a>. However the Mac he had was left lying around since it was stuck on 10.13 and hence has not been getting security updates since November 12, 2020 and has not even been usable with Vivaldi for a long while also.</p><p>We are sending him a newer Apple Silicon based Mac (since that would also allow easier testing of internal builds using iOS simulator) but in the mean time I pointed out that he could upgrade his current machine with <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OpenCoreLegacyPatcher" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenCoreLegacyPatcher</span></a>, despite Apple preventing upgraded via the regular method.</p><p>He went all the way from <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/macOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macOS</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/HighSierra" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>HighSierra</span></a> 10.13, right up to macOS 15 <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Sequoia" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Sequoia</span></a> without any obvious issues. Once again, it is silly that Apple is letting these working machines just be wasted.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a></p>

Yea, sure you could go that path but there is a less invasive approach (and less risk of damaging parts or connectors with my sausage fingers). </p><p>Up and working again - and in line for getting <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a> configured on this mid-2015 <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/macbook_pro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macbook_pro</span></a> </p><p><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagecomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputing</span></a> <br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagecomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputing</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagecomputint" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputint</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagecomputer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputer</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagecomputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputers</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagecomputalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagecomputalk</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/vintagehardware" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>vintagehardware</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/computerHistory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computerHistory</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/retro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retro</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/retroComputers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retroComputers</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/WallOfRetro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WallOfRetro</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/retroTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retroTech</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/retroTechnology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>retroTechnology</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/nerdsOfVintage" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>nerdsOfVintage</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/happyNerding" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>happyNerding</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/computer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>computer</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/tech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>tech</span></a><br><a href="https://defcon.social/tags/apple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>apple</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/VintageApple" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VintageApple</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/VintageMacintosh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>VintageMacintosh</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/macintosh" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>macintosh</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/mac" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mac</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/mac_pro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mac_pro</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/mac_osx" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>mac_osx</span></a> <a href="https://defcon.social/tags/MacintoshPr0n" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>MacintoshPr0n</span></a></p>

Ruarí Ødegaard<p>At least one other user who somehow got past the WiFi problems on install (maybe they used alt networking connection via WiFi or ethernet adapter 🤷) having harware issues with the Camera and Keyboard backlight (both of which work with Ubuntu). The post is two years old and these issues might now be resolved but given my WiFi installer issues, I could not count on it. So this does not seem worth the hassle when Ubuntu works out of the box and even macOS Ventura could be installed (again with no obvious downsides) via <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/OCLP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OCLP</span></a>. </p><p>I'm putting this down as a fail for Google. And people who did get it installed had other issues, e.g. no working Camera (see the second image). Perhaps that is working now but judging by the semi working wifi, I have my doubts. Also it is not a great OS option. Again this was more about satisying my curiosity and I did, at best it is a subpar experience because you need to work around issues with the installer. 🤷</p>
