Obscure Games 12:

I know I have talked about Splatterhouse but hear me out. Because this one is quite interesting.

Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti is released for NES, exclusive to Japan.

The gameplay is as always high quality. Expected from Splatterhouse series. Platforming is quite enjoyable too. The combat harmonizes with the movement rather effortlessly, which is something that I deeply appreciated while playing the game.

What makes this game unique is that it is a parody of Splatterhouse. Parody platformers were flourished in NES and SNES era. As a result the game embraces much more comedic tone compared to the source material. I believe such cultural shift gives game its identity, and diverges from everything else.

As a parody it references quite a bit of pop-cultural references, and they fit the atmosphere of the game quite well. I will not expose the references since it can spoil the experience but trust me they will make you smile.

You should give this game a chance. As always it is always nice to share and learn about such titles. Games that are revived thanks to the fan translations. I have discovered this game thanks to the Splatterhouse community by large and the fan translation enabled me to experience it.

Also, it is available in Namco Museum Archives Vol. 1.

Definitely worth the effort!

I’ve been playing #Splatterhouse for the spooky #HalloweenGaming vibes. The gratuitous violence and pixelated gore is actually so over the top, it’s actually kind of great. I can’t believe that this game didn’t cause the same controversy that Mortal Kombat did with the violence tbh.

Anyways, the difficulty on this game is just absurd. It’s inconceivable to me that somebody could actually beat this without save scumming (I’m playing on Namco Museum). I’ve got to see it through!

I finally completed an arcade stick run of all 3 original Splatterhouse games on stream!

What an absolute NIGHTMARE it was. Bwahahaha!

I have trouble believing ANYONE beat the original game in an actual arcade without burning through months of saved up allowance money--or getting 86'ed for a wild stream of expletives.

I plan on doing a full back-to-back-to-back trilogy run in October!

I'm working on a stream "roadmap" of sorts so that those of you interested can get an idea of the games I'll be streaming in the future!

Here's just a li'l taste of what is in store for us in the 'near' future...

I want to do a trilogy run of Splatterhouse using an arcade stick proper if able--I know I can with the original game via MAME but if I have to use a Sega Genesis controller for the other two, so be it!

I have always been interested in the original arcade version of Splatterhouse, so this is great news!

I love the Arcade Archives series, since it gives us easy access to plenty retro titles, that were sometimes hard to get before.

Anyone else planning on getting it?
