#AppleTrees

Three more apple trees arrived for planting out: Laxton's Superb, Baker's Delicious and Chivers Delight. The pear trees from 2023 didn't do very well so I have given up on them for now (though it was mostly sheep and bugs!)

It's quite complicated keeping track of all the different varieties we have, which are compatible pollinators, what time of year they fruit etc. Yes I have a spreadsheet.

Rex Welland was a longtime local resident who loved collecting lots of #HeritageApple species. He spent a lifetime, collecting cuttings & grafting to grow in his large backyard. He donated this land, which was his backyard, as part of #LandConservancy agreement with the Town of View Royal to keep it as a heritage orchard for the community to steward & share.

There's 125 heritage #apple species growing there.

We did it! 😃🌳🍎🍏

Anyone have advice on planting an apple seedling (sold with the roots in soil) in Wainuiomata, New Zealand. Which is on the border of USDA agricultural zones 9 and 10. The site has heavy clay soil and gets some very strong winds in Fall and Spring. They have gone to a proper nursery so hopefully have got something with appropriate root stock for the area.

Especially around the issues of soil drainage and whether or not to add soil amendments.

Mum is asking me planting advice on an apple tree sapling they just bought. I know hardly anything about fruit tree planting but I am looking up things from trusted sources and running it through my general gardening knowledge filter and sending her info.

This is actually how I learn most anything about #Gardening. I was not raised around gardeners; I am self taught and now I am teaching my mother.
