Honored. Inspired. Driven.
Last week at #CSUN2025, we had the incredible opportunity to connect, learn, and grow alongside some of the most innovative minds in accessibility and assistive technology. As a fully remote team, gathering in person is always meaningful, but being part of conversations that shape the future of our technology makes it even more special.
We’re grateful for the chance to hear from industry leaders, learn from fellow innovators, and connect with Explorers (both new and those who have been here from the start) who shape the work we do every day. Having a seat at this table is an honor, and we’re more committed than ever to making Aira the best it can be.
Thank you, Center on Disabilities at CSUN, for another unforgettable year!

It goes without saying, persons with disabilities deserve to exist without being labeled "inspirational".
Vulnerability doesn’t cancel out autonomy.
Disabled people deserve respect for their choices, independence, and humanity.
Support us where needed, but never forget we’re individuals with our own agency.

As technologists, we have a unique and wonderful opportunity to make the world more inclusive, and so today, on #IDPWD, please think about how you can make your work more inclusive, more accessible, more open.
By helping one group of people, we make experiences better for everyone -- think about how captions have made your life easier, even if your hearing is perfect.
Our #Accessibility Handbook is a great place to start: https://ter.li/rff2zc
For sighted students, much of their workflow is seamless. They pick up a textbook, scan a page, and jot down notes—effortlessly. Need to format references for an essay? Easy—just plug them into a tool like Zotero or EndNote, and the software takes care of it. These tools don't diminish their learning; they enhance it, freeing up time for what truly matters: engaging with the material and sharpening critical thinking skills.
Now, imagine being a blind student. Before we can even begin learning, we face an entire layer of barriers. A printed textbook? Useless until we secure an accessible version, often a PDF. And even then, accessibility issues abound—missing tags, unlabeled images, and awkward layouts. Troubleshooting becomes a prerequisite. We must master how to make screen readers navigate the document, extract text from stubborn PDFs, and decipher complex structures without losing our place. Only then can we start the real work: reading and learning.

society doesn’t see disabled people as people. We’re symbols—either of triumph over adversity or tragic cautionary tales.
It’s easier for non-disabled people to project their fears or fantasies onto us than to engage with complex realities of disabled lives.
Mentioning this to a friend, he said, waggishly: “Well, that’s the biggest audience you’ve had in a theatre for some time”.
