If the United Nations itself supports LGBTQ+ rights, why can't its member states do the same or even us as individuals? Attitudes take time to change. Policy changes can take even longer. With the United Nations we all shall promote and protect LGBTQ+ rights.
After that, the UN slowly made more and more efforts regarding LGBTQ+ until now. Year after year, many UN member countries are also making good contributions to LGBTQ+. As of 2025, same-sex marriage is legally performed and recognised in 38 UN member states.
Since its founding in 1945, the UN had not discussed LGBTQ+ rights until 1994 through the resolution of the Toonen v. Australia case by the UN Human Rights Committee declared that laws criminalizing consensual same-sex relations between adults are in violation of international human rights law.
