I am sadly moving one of my machines from #Fedora to #Debian.

I prefer Fedora in many ways but this machine runs several instances of #Klipper in containers.

The containers themselves are based on Debian and... wow... there is so much pain when it comes to dealing with USB in containers and it compounds when the distro host and the base images approach things differently.

A mess of systemd units and fragile fixes in the container and host just aren't worth it.

Pros:

* Cheap enclosure kit
* Cheap in general
* CoreXY (I mean, the A1 is fine for the most part, but there are definitely prints where a fixed bed would be better)
* Slightly odd 220x220 bed.

Cons:

* Getting the impression it’s #Klipper -ish but not quite?
* The company has been around for a long time, but I do wonder how long they will sell replacement parts. Proprietary hotend/nozzle, naturally.
* No resale value
* They’ve forked Orcaslicer, because of course they have.

I doubt I am alone in debating building a lobotomy kit (or stripping it for a custom build) so that BTT announcement brings me ridiculous joy. I ran a bunch of their boards in my old Ender and they've been awesome.

If you were considering a lobotomy and want to go more hands-on than BTT, check out this project. They are building a Klipper swap-in for the P1 series. It is brand new and nowhere near feature complete, but proceeding super fast. (Technically, you could print with it today even with an AMS but it is a very young project. Don't hassle them about missing features.)

I converted my printer to klipper, and I wrote about the choices I made.

My girlfriend with a chronic 3D printing condition said that it was a decent printer for the price bracket.1 So I picked one up. It’s proven to be helpful in many ways, and has enabled projects that would have previously involved road trips–I love visiting my girlfriend, but spending 4 hours driving every time I want to 3D print something is not how I want to spend my life. That modifier clause sure is doing some heavy lifting there. She might have paid twenty times what I did for her Bambu X1C, but boy howdy does it run sprints around my Ender in a plethora of ways. ↩
