🌐 1995: The Birth of JavaScript • @ricmac

「 the plan in 1995 was that JavaScript would be the scripting language to create client-side programs that ran inside the #Netscape browser, while big brother Java would be used for developing more complex web components. Eich saw #JavaScript at the time as “a ‘glue language’ for the Web designers and part time programmers who were building Web content from components such as images, plugins, and #Java applets.” 」

There used to be a commercial version of
#Firefox originally.
It was called
#NetscapeNavigator.
Then
#Microsoft made #InternetExplorer and released it for free.
Then you saw most websites have a little plaque on their home page "Designed to work with
#Internet #Explorer".
Then Netscape went away and Firefox was born.
Then you saw
#Google release its own #Chrome #browser.
And
#Apple. (Internet Explorer and Firefox were both available for the Mac originally).
And then Apple borrowed the source code for the
#Konqueror #web #browser from the #KDEProject and release their browser for free. (Apple didn't pay anything to the #KDE #project too by the way.)
See a pattern here?
They already tried charging for a browser.
#Netscape #Navigator cost $19.95 back in the day.
It didn't work.

i can't stop laughing at the thought of someone seeing #kiki's NCSA Mosaic/Netscape 1.x theme in 2025 and wondering if the entire world wide web was entirely grey in 1994.
(it was)

if this doesn't do violence to the idea of software preservation, i don't know what could

My friend @vvzen wrote up a much more clever and sophisticated version of a #hack I did many years ago to alter the opening splash screen art of $7000 professional #VFX software, #houdinifx

It's a great read and explanation across #cpp , #docker #qt and our old friend #LD_PRELOAD. Nice to have some fun in the #vfxpipeline mines.

When I've got a second I'm going to recreate this setup for my original target, #FoundryNuke

I was reading a story today about #theoldnet and how if you leave an “&” symbol at the end of an #email , it means you want the recipient to reply back. Does anyone remember this or still do this today? I don’t recall that being a thing or maybe it was and I didn’t notice. Gonna tag below with adjacent words in hopes of response.

I remember reading a Wired cover article with Mark Andreeson where he told that at Netscape they have the "Netscape Finger Cheer", where you form an N with your fingers.

Man, the dotcom era was hilariously insane, ESPECIALLY in hindsight. Knowing what the man became, I guess we all now have a particular finger cheer too.

Insbesondere der 4. Tröt:

"So Mozilla did this delicate dance, where you could download the Suite from mozilla dot org, but the site insisted that normal users really shouldn't do that. You should go get a Mozilla "distribution" from a commercial vendor instead. Like Netscape.« 🤯

Weil die "Mozilla-Suite" nur die FLOSS-Version des eigentlichen Produktes sein sollte, des #Netscape Navigators von (damals dann) AOL, die die ganze Bude finanziert haben!
