Rocks breaking in tension, compression, and shear; an interesting teaching talk yesterday by Dr. Drew Lubiniecki. Below is a fascinating figure showing the loss of porosity in deformation bands (DB) in a sheared carbonate. The original porosity is shown in blue.

Just a gentle reminder that through geological time, shifts in #carbonate producers mean that the geometry of carbonate platforms (as well as #reef shape) changed.
Please try to keep that in mind when drawing your models. I'm trying to stay mad, but I'm actually just growing disappointed.
Somehow, with everything going on, I forgot to acknowledge that the term started (and now a few weeks in). As taxing as it is, it's nice to be back in the classroom. Being able to talk about the #marine #carbon system and #carbonate rocks to #students is a nice change of pace.
Thermal-induced #crystallographic transformation in shells of #mussels reveal that crystallographic features in the #carbonate are more resistant to #diagenetic alteration than stable #isotope ratios.

#WeekendReading: Cala et al. on the dissolution kinetics of #carbonate minerals in the oceanic water column. Showing that the dissolution rate is proportional to the saturation state, seems trivial, but it really isn't.
Something like this was much needed for a while now.

What destroys a #carbonate (#mesophotic) platform? It turns out that erosion, destabilization, and lower slope dismantling all work independently of each other.

#WeekendReading: Catching up on Wei and Zhang's thoughts on shallow-water #carbonate early #diagenesis. I think I'd like to play again at some point with this idea of diagenesis based correlation.

Cold seeps are apparently rather prevalent on the US Atlantic margin. To me that supports that near-seafloor #authigenic #carbonate formation (which happens there) is likely much more prevalent than previously considered.

We've been working on a massive riddle tying together #self-organization, #carbonate #diagenesis, reactive transport, #paleoclimate and #Milankovich cycles, and very stiff PDE systems.

#Calcite can form when cool groundwater warms as it rises to the surface. Calcium carbonate exhibits inverse solubility -it's less soluble in warmer water. As a result #tufa deposits can form -like those at Mono Lake. A nice write up of groundwater carbonate deposits at:

The most beautiful calcite found in Poland was mined in the #Zelejów #quarry - Chęciny #marble or #Zelejówrose (since the 16th century). Its decorativeness is due to the crystalline structure of light #calcite surrounded by cherry #hematite. It has a diversified #ribbon-strip, #breccia or bow structure. Unlike classic marbles, it was not formed by metamorphic processes (advanced physical and chemical transformations of #carbonate #rocks ) but #hydrothermal #Wavellcastle was built from it.
